BENDIA, Leando It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leando Bendia on Friday, February 12, 2016, at Portal Village in his 102nd year surrounded by family. Leando is survived by his best friend and beloved wife of 70 years Domenica Bendia (nee Boggio). Loving father to Diane Poehlman (Greg), and Alan Bendia (Diane). Cherished grandfather to Jennifer Weatherup (Greg), Carolyn Pauhl (Jeremy), Chris Bendia and Elizabeth Bendia. Much loved great-grandfather to Sophie and Spencer Weatherup and Alexis Pauhl. Leando is survived by sisters Jean Walsh (late Lou) and Albina Hopkins (Jack) as well as brother-in-law, John Chesniak and sister-in-law Mary Boggio (Late John). Leando is predeceased by his brothers Orlando (infancy), Louis (Mary), Quindo (Josephine) and Clyde (Ester), sisters Clara Bendia (infancy), Gina Bendia (infancy), Sarah Dionne (Andy), Louise Sprung (Emmerson), Nora Minor (Eldon), Lisa Biederman (Harry) and Margaret Chesniak. He was born in Port Colborne on January 6, 1915 to Antonio and Oreglia (Maria) Bendia and lived his whole life in Port Colborne. As the oldest surviving son when his father passed away in 1934, Leando was forced to leave school and help support his mother and remaining brothers and sisters. Throughout his whole life the love of his family was his most cherished possession. Leando spent his entire working career at Sunbeam Shoe Factory retiring in 1980. He was a Veteran of the Second World War as he served with The Oxford Rifles in Europe. Leando had a love of music and played the clarinet for most of his life. He was in numerous Army bands, Marching bands and Concert bands throughout his musical career. He also enjoyed teaching young students to play the clarinet and other wind instruments. Leando had a green thumb, growing numerous fruit trees, berries and plants at his home. For many years Leando was an active member in various church ministries at St. Therese of Lisieux R.C. Church. The family of Leando would like to thank all the staff at Garden Terrace and Portal Village especially the nursing staff for all their care, support, and treatment he received while living there especially the past few months. Leando’s family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Vigil Prayers will be recited on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Therese of Lisieux R. C. Knight of the Year – Bruce Cutting

Bruce Cutting (left) accepts the Knight of the Year award from Al Bendia.

On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, I had the honour of presenting Brother Bruce Cutting with Knight of the Year honours for the 2015-2016 Columbian Year.

Bruce is a long-time member of Council 9276.  Over the years, he has served in many executive positions and is a constant volunteer.  Bruce is the “coffee guy” and can be relied upon to provide coffee at many Knights events!

Bruce didn’t let this honour go to his head!  Right after the picture was taken, he helped with the serving and clean up at the annual Pancake and Sausage dinner, run by the Council.

Congratulations, Bruce!

Fraternally,

Al Bendia
Grand Knight 9276
